Couple lose 10st between them after ‘mortifying’ plane trip left them in tears

Husband and wife Paul and Michaela Allardes’s busy lives looking after their four children, one of whom has severe learning difficulties, meant their own health was rarely prioritised.

Their bad eating habits meant the weight slowly piled on, and before they knew it they were having to shop in plus size stores.

More worryingly, Paul was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol that was dangerously high after neglecting his weight gain for so long.

But it was an upsetting plane experience for a well-deserved family holiday that was the final straw for the couple and they decided it was time to change.

Michaela, 53, explains: “We hadn’t always been overweight. But over time and with our busy working lives and four children, one of whom suffers with severe learning difficulties and autism, it meant we didn’t have time to think about our health.

“One takeaway too many and we were heading in the wrong direction.

“I would only shop for clothes in those that specialised for the larger lady, and I felt trapped and miserable.

“My eyes were opened when we went on holiday, and I had to ask for a seat belt extender.

“I couldn’t even put the armrest down between the seats – I was in tears, distraught and mortified.”

Paul, 60, said: “We were both in a terrible dark place.

“I’d been in denial about my diabetes over the years and had to undergo surgery due to my condition.”

So the couple decided to sign up to the 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan.

After just three months of being on the programme, Paul’s diabetes went into remission and both his blood pressure and cholesterol had returned to normal.

Paul said: “It was such an emotional phone call I received from my diabetic nurse to let me know my diabetes was in remission, that I literally wept.

“I can’t believe the impact that The 1:1 Diet has had on my life I’m so much healthier and have a much more positive outlook.”

After only two weeks on plan, Michaela had lost a stone.

Michaela said: “We both suddenly had a new zest for life, and as the weight dropped off, I went from a size 20/22 to a size eight to 10.

“The joy of being able to shop for clothes in normal shops was unbelievable.

“I’ve now lost seven stone and have never felt better.

“Paul has also lost three stone, yet more than that, it’s been such a life-changing achievement.

“We are now able to enjoy playing with our grandchildren and feel so much fitter and healthier than ever before.
